HORSCH and SAM-DIMENSION strengthen their partnership

Based on a strategic co-operation, both partners develop SpotSpraying integrations – targeted application where it is necessary.

The requirements on effective crop care become increasingly demanding. Active agents are omitted, costs rise, and the time windows get shorter. Added to this is resistance in weeds such as blackgrass and ryegrass. SpotSpraying provides the answer: precise application where it is needed, rather than applying more agents across the whole field. This protects the crops and reduces yield losses caused by herbicide applications.

HORSCH and the founders of SAM-DIMENSION, Dr Alexander Linn and Dr Robin Mink, have been working together on this approach since 2019. Anyone who has followed the dialogue will already be familiar with the shared topics, for example from the HORSCH Live discussion panel on SpotSpraying and PatchSpraying. This co-operation, which has developed over the years, is now turning into a closer partnership: HORSCH takes a strategic share in SAM-DIMENSION.

The focus is on SAM-DIMENSION’s SpotSpraying mapping technology for the targeted control of ISOBUS field sprayers to ensure precise herbicide application as well as deeper machine integration to facilitate the use of the maps in HORSCH Leeb sprayers. With SAM-CAM AI, the crop is recorded from the air before to the application. Unlike the online method, the camera is therefore not mounted on the boom. Each field is captured with millimetre image resolution. Grasses and weeds can thus be reliably identified as early as the cotyledon stage – at a work rate of over 60 hectares per hour.

The data is analysed ”offline” using edge AI and cloud servers. This allows for processing large volumes of data and refining the AI models continuously. The result is robust and precise SpotSpraying maps, including an overview map of all application zones and detailed field specifications for calculating the required spraying mixture. This allows farmers to see, even before the application begins, where application will take place and how much they will save.

The only technical requirements for the sprayer are SectionControl (section control) with precise GPS control and a terminal capable of SpotSpraying. The precise boom control system provided by HORSCH is also a major advantage for successful application. Individual spots (single plants) as well as larger patches can be treated with all HORSCH crop care sprayers, from pneumatic nozzle control to the PrecisionSpray PWM solution. The SpotSpraying map from the SAM portal is transferred directly to the HORSCH terminal via myHorsch. The HORSCH eos T10 terminals have already laid the foundation for processing large SpotSpraying maps reliably and with exceptional performance, even across large areas. Due to its machine and sales network, HORSCH ensures that the technology reaches all farms comprehensively. This creates a seamless workflow from drone to nozzle.

Comments on the partnership

Dr Alexander Linn, Managing Director and Co-founder of SAM-DIMENSION

“We come from a farming background and develop solutions for practical use. Digital solutions, too, have to be robust enough to work in the field and deliver genuine added value for the farms. Within the HORSCH network, we have had a very practical exchange of ideas right from the start and have been able to implement developments directly in the field.”

Dr Robin Mink, Managing Director and Co-founder of SAM-DIMENSION

“SAM-DIMENSION’s focus is on offering a new tool in crop care – SpotSpraying mapping – that allows us to tackle current challenges. With SAM-DIMENSION, SpotSpraying can be used simply, reliably and effectively wherever it creates real added value. In HORSCH, we and our customers have a strong partner who understands how practical innovation works on a wide scale.”

Theodor Leeb, Managing Director of HORSCH

“With SAM-DIMENSION, we will be able to offer a comfortable and smooth way of using these maps due to the deep integration of SpotSpraying map functions into our machines. At SAM, we work with people who are determined to solve a real problem until it works. That suits us perfectly.”

The independence of both companies remains unchanged: the machines and application maps will continue to be compatible with all manufacturers. Together, we will ensure that SpotSpraying reaches as many farms as possible, more quickly and more easily. This partnership will expand the range of products and services on offer, not restrict it.
