Whisky - The "water of life" and for Simon a passion for life!

Simon is head of internal sales at HORSCH and for a few years he has been indulging a special passion: He collects whiskys!

But how was Simon inspired to do this?

For more than 20 years he has been part of a " Schafkopf" team. Twice a month he meets his buddies to play cards. About 8 years ago, they had the idea to make a trip to Scotland. The driving force was Simon's friend. He also is part of the Schafkopf" team and has been a whisky lover for years. At that time, Simon only had some few points of contact with whisky.

The trip to Scotland - To the origin of the whisky distillery

It all started in the Scottish whisky region of Speyside. More precisely, in the Aberlour distillery. During the ten-day trip, the buddies visited many whisky distilleries and tasted a wide variety of whiskys. For Simon, who originally studied mechanical engineering, it was a completely new experience which he enjoyed immensely.

What happened next?

The whole "Schafkopf" team developed a passion for good whisky. Especially for "Distillery Only Whiskys". These collector's items are bottled and labelled directly in the distilleries, and they can only be purchased there.

Meanwhile, the friends have about 120 to 130 different whiskies. They also exchange bottles, so everyone has different samples at home. Simon adds a few bottles to his personal collection every year. He orders them online or takes them with him from various trips to Scotland.

Common hobbies connect

This is also true for Simon and his buddies.

Four times a year, he meets up with friends for a blind tasting. They taste a wide variety of whisky distillates. They drink from a "nosing glass". This glass differs from the whiskey tumbler you often see in movies by the slightly higher tulip shaped design.

But whisky tasting in the privacy of their homes is not the only point on the agenda. This summer they will go through the whole whisky process at the Scottish Springbank Distillery and taste it. Before that, a visit to a whisky fair is also on the agenda.

And why is Simon so thrilled about whiskey manufacturing?

Because that there is a basic recipe for whisky, just as there is for beer. It differs from country to country. For Scotch whisky, the main ingredient is malted barley. Other grains may also be added. The raw spirit has an alcohol content of 68% to 71%. It is stored in oak barrels with a maximum size of 700 liters for at least three years. Water may be added before bottling.

It's great to see what exciting hobbies our employees have!
